UMCG, Hanzeplein 1, Groningen

The Blockchaingers Health Deep Dive is part of a string of 7 Deep Dives in different domains. This series of Deep Dives is connected as they are all tracks of the Blockchaingers Hackathon in April 5-8, 2018. The Track Deep Dives are organized to inspire, connect and prepare the teams, the partners, the experts and the whole ecosystem for the biggest blockchain hackathon in the world.

Personal health record for everyone

UMCG wants to achieve a self-sovereign and personal health record for everyone. There are many organizations a person has to deal with regarding his or her health. General practitioners, pharmacists, specialists and hospitals, but also regulators, governments and insurance companies are involved with the personal health record. In the current situation, medical health records are not in the possession of the person they apply to. Current medical records are likely incomplete and unevenly distributed along several files. This makes them vulnerable to mistakes, which might lead to medical problems.

Another important part of the work of UMCG is scientific health research. Currently, UMCG has the largest biobank and study on healthy ageing in Europe with their Lifelines project. Lifelines has health data of 167.000 participants which has been studied upon for 30 years. Is it possible to decentralize these records, by building a Kickstarter for Scientific Research, where every participant can decide where and when to give their data for research?

Introducing the challenges of the Blockchaingers Hackathon Health Track

Challenge 1: Hospital at Home
A new field in healthcare where patients get to be hospitalized in their own home. In this new field the patient needs to be the owner of its medical file, as his home ‘is’ the hospital room. This ownership should be able to incorporate diverse data access of multiple parties in a safe and secure way. This is because, currently in the health sector, many different organizations ranging from hospital-specialists and pharmacists to home care organizations, are involved in the process of recovery and need access, in differing degrees, to personal health records. Every caretaker should be able to get to information relevant to their treatment, add treatments and conditions of the patient and get updates when relevant. A prototype/working system is to be tested on a patients group in 2018.

Challenge 2: Kickstarting scientific health research
Lifelines (UMCG affiliated) has the largest biobank and study on healthy ageing in Europe, where health data of 167.000 participants is collected and has been studied for 30 years. Is it possible to decentralize these records, by building a Kickstarter for Scientific Research, where every participant can decide where and when to give their data for research? Thereby giving everyone in the world a chance to do relevant research, and for everyone to make this research possible by provisioning their (specific) data.

Free Zone: The track sponsors are welcoming out-of-the-box and wild ideas. If you think you have a great idea for this track, come to the Track Deep Dive and discuss your hackathon-idea with UMCG.
