This is the place to be | Climate Testing Ground

You cannot come up with innovative solutions to climate problems on your own. “Connecting with diverse people and organizations is essential,” says Piet Zijlstra, project leader at the Climate Testing Ground on Campus Groningen. “Here we test and measure whether innovative solutions work in real life. But at least as important are the awareness and the cooperation that we create here”. Tim Havinga also notices this during his internship.

Immensely interesting

“Water shortage due to drought is a current problem, as is the problem of flooding with sudden heavy rainfall, also in this region. How does it arise and what solutions can we come up with? I'm researching that here at Campus Groningen during my internship at the Climate Testing Ground in the project 'The story between dikes'. I am participating in research into, for example, circular bridges, dyke protection, water storage and tree growth areas. Extremely important and immensely interesting.”

Captivated by the climate

Through his Built Environment studies at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Tim came across the Climate Testing Ground. “Quite by accident, I ended up here. Namely through an assignment on climate change. then my interest in the subject arose,” says Tim. “During my internship, I really discovered that I want to work in the field of Spatial Development. Maybe at a government or continue in the world of climate change like Piet. Thanks to this research at the Climate Testing Ground on Campus Groningen, I really see my opportunities in this region.”

Make combinations

‘We desperately need young people like Tim,’ adds Piet. “People from the field of Spatial Development (part of Built Environment) can make combinations between digitization and construction. That is perfect for the climate challenges faced by municipalities, for example. But also, companies that work on innovative solutions for water shortages. Here on the Campus, at the Climate Testing Ground, you meet each other. Get to know each other.”

Opportunities

So no shortage of opportunities on Campus? “No, certainly not,” agrees Tim. “There are many opportunities for internships and interesting work here. If you are a student, visit companies. Go to a lecture by a guest speaker. Because of that, you can discover your own interests.” Piet also sees many opportunities at Campus Groningen for companies, students, and young professionals. “There is already a lot of collaboration here, between different educational institutions and companies. And I see even more possibilities. It's all here on the Campus: facilities, good accessibility, knowledge, and young talent.’’

Career fair

Any tips for companies looking for young professionals? “Certainly! Organize a job market with good content. As a student, you quickly learn more about the professional field. And you can easily make contact.” “Don't forget to present yourself properly as a company online,” Piet adds. “A good website with clear information about the young professionals you are looking for. And give young people a platform.”
