Biomaterials development center

The goal of the Biomaterials Development Center is to reduce implant related infections by bringing a number of innovative infection-resistant biomaterials (or coatings) to clinical application

The Biomaterials Development Center (BDC) is seeking a number of major device and material companies to invest in a long term partnership to co-develop biomaterials.

By combining the extensive knowledge, facilities and resources of the BDC together with the market knowledge, engineering skills and resources of proven medical device/material companies, we aim to jointly develop new infection-resistant materials for clinical application.

The BDC coordinates and aligns the development of infection-resistant biomaterials from bench to bed using a number of key departments within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen (RUG).

"Infection is the major cause of implant failure. On average, 5% of all biomaterial-implant patients experience severe complications, mainly due to infection"
