The department of rehabilitation health care of the UMCG has received a ZonMW grant of €400.00,-. This grant will be used to do research after the effectiviness and cost efficiency of hand prosthesis. The performance of the care surrounding hand prostheses will also be evaluated. The project starts in december 2018 and will take three years. In this study there will be collaboration with all Dutch rehabilitation teams that treat patients with arm protheses. The grant is part of the ZonMW programm Efficiency Studies.
People who miss an arm due to amputation or birth, get a hand prosthesis in many cases, to counter the loss of function of this arm. The costs of care concerning hand prostheses have increased significantly in the last decade. This is due to, amongst other reasons, the introduction of so called bionic prosthesis hands. These are prosthesis hands of which the thumb and fingers can move seperately.
