WarmteStad has started with the preparations for the construction of a new, final heat plant at the corner Zernikelaan / Pondematen on Zernike Campus. This will replace the building that currently functions as a temporary heat plant, recognisable by the text ‘Wij houden je Warm’ (We keep you Warm).
WarmteStad – a collaboration between the municipality of Groningen and Waterbedrijf Groningen – has been founded in 2014 and installs a heating grid in the northern districts of Groningen. This pipeline network with warm water starts at Zernike Campus and spans 4 kilometers by now. The heating grid will be heated by residual heat from data centers Bytesnet and QTS in the future, both located on Zernike Campus. Solar energy is an intended additional heat source. Over 10.000 households, organisations and buildings will make use of sustainable heat in the future.
Licensing procedure
The current heat plant will be replaced by a new building, with heat pumps, cogeneration and buffers a.o. The licensing procedure for the construction has been started. Dependent on the licensing and tender procedure, the construction works will start in the first quarter of 2021 at the latest.
