The registration for the second edition of Startup in Residence Northern Netherlands has started. Young companies can work again with established companies to create innovative solutions for several societal challenges. Campus Groningen als joins again, as secondary challenge owner, together with owner the Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
Campus Groningen would like to contribute to a zero waste campus. With our Share Campus Service, we want to inspire, encourage and activate everyone on campus to reduce waste and separate correctly. We want a physically visible solution for both indoor and outdoor spaces and a direct visible connection to SDG12. We will begin in one of the buildings of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
Startup in Residence biedt startups de kans om een half jaar lang actief samen te werken met de gemeenten Leeuwarden, Groningen, Coevorden en Emmen, de Hanzehogeschool en Campus Groningen, Groningen Seaports, Waterbedrijf Vitens, Waterschap Noorderzijlvest en de provincies Fryslân, Drenthe en Groningen. Tijdens het programma krijgen de ondernemers ondersteuning en begeleiding van professionele coaches om hun idee en prototype verder te ontwikkelen tot een goed product. De uiteindelijke oplossingen kunnen aan het eind van het programma ook door de partijen worden ingekocht.
Noordelijke samenwerking
Founded in Groningen begon in 2018 met het Startup in Residence Groningen-programma en breidde dit vorig jaar uit met Founded in Friesland naar een Noord-Nederlandse editie. En met resultaat: negen startups gingen de samenwerking aan en het gezamenlijke programma leidde meermaals tot inkoop. Volop aanleiding om het opgeschaalde programma door te zetten.
“Het is van groot belang dat we de startups kansen blijven geven in Noord-Nederland. Met het voorzetten van het programma Startup in Residence kunnen we de, vaak jonge, ondernemers uitdagen en stimuleren om met innovaties te blijven komen”, aldus Friso Douwstra, gedeputeerde Economische Zaken bij de provincie Fryslân.

Background
Campus Groningen would like to contribute to a zero waste campus. With our Share Campus Service, we want to inspire, encourage and activate everyone on campus to reduce waste and separate correctly. We want a physically visible solution for both indoor and outdoor spaces and a direct visible connection to SDG12. We will begin in one of the buildings of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
The challenge owner will be the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The Hanze has set itself the goal of becoming a ‘zero waste institution’ by 2025. This means that the residual waste will be reduced to 0%. Since the summer of 2019, separate waste bins have been installed. Its waste is collected by the cleaning company and then collected and processed by Renewi. Separating waste at the ‘front end’ is intended to raise awareness and actively involve people in the zero waste objective. However, there is still not proper separation. Despite improved communication and adjustments to the waste stations themselves (consistency, use of color and QR codes), the waste streams remain impure and there is insufficient progress in residual waste reduction. The 2020 waste scan shows that 70% of what is thrown in the residual waste bin should have been separated in the other bins. Possible causes are a lack of easily accessible information or the fact that the City of Groningen does have a waste separation policy and people are therefore used to throwing everything into one bin at home.
The question/challenge for startups
Develop a solution that inspires, encourages and activates people in and around our buildings to properly separate waste.
Criteria
- It is important for the startup to speak Dutch .
- The current waste stations of the Hanzehogeschool are the focal point.
- For the solution, keep in mind the target audience of the Hanze University (student and employee, national and international).
- We are not looking for an app. We prefer a physical, on-site visible solution.
- Solution is replicable for other campus users (e.g., UG, UMCG).
- Visible linkage to the Sustainable Development Goals, and specifically SDG12.

Twaalf uitdagingen
In totaal hebben de samenwerkende organisaties 12 ‘challenges’ gedefinieerd, waar startups zich voor kunnen inschrijven. Zo willen steeds meer organisaties, geïnspireerd door de zeventien Sustainable Development Goals, ‘zero waste instellingen’ worden. Maar hoe stimuleer je campusbezoekers om afval correct te scheiden? Of hoe wordt de verkeersveiligheid onder fietsers in het Drentse buitengebied vergroot? En met de toenemende droogte en steeds heviger wordende regenbuien, is Leeuwarden op zoek naar een oplossing die de negatieve gevolgen van klimaatverandering helpt voorkomen.

Op 26 januari is er een informatiebijeenkomst waar de challenge eigenaren extra uitleg geven en vragen beantwoorden. Startups kunnen zich tot 1 maart aanmelden. In mei beginnen de geselecteerde startups aan het programma.

Het samenwerkingsprogramma begon als initiatief in Amsterdam om startups en overheden op een innovatieve en gelijkwaardige manier te laten samenwerken.
