'Inspiring and open meeting place'
The City Council has approved the proposed establishment framework for the locations of the old Niemeyer factory. This framework includes the plans that real estate developer MWPO has drafted in collaboration with Campus Groningen and the municipality. The plans allow for a good mix of desired 'incubators,' commercial enterprises, educational institutions, and a cultural public function, with digital as the connecting theme. This decision enables MWPO to become the owner of the Niemeyer buildings.
Alderman Carine Bloemhoff: 'The plans really align with how we envision the use of the Niemeyer factory. From an old tobacco factory to the new economy, where there is room for digital companies, education, and culture. An inspiring and open meeting place for everyone. The Niemeyer factory will also remain a recognizable landmark in our city. This honors the cultural and historical value of this characteristic building.'
Establishment framework
The establishment framework outlines the main features of the buildings and what will be developed in and around them. Based on this, MWPO and the municipality of Groningen have signed a letter of intent. This marks the start of the next phase, in which MWPO, in collaboration with Campus Groningen and in close consultation with the municipality, will develop the plans into an integrated development framework. Kristiaan Capelle from MWPO in Groningen stated: "This is a unique location in the city, and we are proud that, as a Groningen-based company, we can develop this for the long term in collaboration with other parties from the city. Our shared ambition is to transform the Niemeyer factory into a vibrant location, with a mix of business, culture, and experiences that strengthen the future of Groningen."
Open for meeting
In the coming months, MWPO and Campus Groningen will further develop the plans to make the Niemeyer factory an inspiring place with lasting impact for all Groningen residents and the region. Edward van der Meer, director of Campus Groningen, stated: 'This plan has been developed in close collaboration with our partners. MWPO and Campus Groningen are working together to create a dynamic space for the region, where the digital sector can thrive, and we build together towards the future of the North.'
Soon, MWPO and Campus Groningen will engage local residents and other interested parties to invite them to contribute to the future development. This marks the beginning of the transformation: from a closed tobacco factory to an inspiring and open meeting place for everyone.
