When COVID-19 reached our country more than a year ago, it became clear to what extent the Netherlands is dependent on countries outside the EU when it comes to medical devices and medicines. Since 2019, the Netherlands has been investigating the opportunities for drug production in its own country and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport reported in June and November of 2020 that security of supply can be achieved by producing intermediate and end products from innovative, sustainable production processes in the Netherlands. A huge opportunity for which Campus Groningen has the right competences, knowledge and entrepreneurship. LIFE Cooperative chairman Dr Ton Vries took up the initiative, formed a strong Groningen coalition with, among others, Nobel Prize winner Prof. Dr. Ben Feringa and the smart foundation for an innovative medicine strategy for the Netherlands and Europe, Prospect-NL, was made from Groningen.
