For patients of the Diabetes center of the UMCG with type 1 diabetes, a new smart insulin pump is available. ‘A pump that combines the best features of several other pumps', says physician Peter van Dijk. ‘Many of our patients have been waiting for this for nearly a year.' The first six patients started using the pump in the beginning of January 2020.
Finally sleeping quietly again
The Diabetes center in the Benelux has the premier in the Benelux by making the so called Tandem t:slim x2 available for patients with type 1 diabetes. Together with diabetes nurse Susanne Pathuis, Van Dijk, expert in diabetes technology, explains how the new pump works. A sensor constantly measures someones glucose level and sends the information via a secured bluetooth connection to the smart insulin pump. The insulin is administered through a canulla. The amount that the patient needs is constantly being monitored and adjusted.
