Upgrade Zernikelaan makes great progress in summer
The Zernikeplein on Zernike Campus received a new look this summer. Before the summer holidays, the square was under construction, now it has been redesigned with a new bus lane and bike and traffic paths.
Besides the Zernikeplein, work has been done at the north side of the Zernikelaan, near EnTranCe. This space has been layed out with new asphalt, a park like design and new bike lanes and footpaths. All this work is part of the project Upgrade Zernikelaan. With the upgrade, the quality of the public space and the traffic safety is increased. "We are very happy with the fast progress. You can see the beautiful contours of the heart of the Zernike Campus emerge", according to Annet de Vree, development manager Campus Groningen.
Current construction works
At the moment, the contractor works on new bike lanes and foot paths between De Mudden and the road de Pondematen, and on the preparation of shifting the traffic lane. The Duisenberg pond, part of the new green center of the campus get a beautiful new walkway. In the upcoming winter, the park next to the Duisenberg pond will be constructed and over 200 trees will be planted along the Zernikelaan.

Ready middle of 2021
In the summer of 2021, the last part of the bus lane between the Kadijk and de Pondematen will be renewed and the central bus stop will be adjusted to electric transport. At the Willem-Alexander Sports Center a podium and a pannacourt will be constructed. After that, the upgrade of the Zernikelaan will be finished, with a beautiful, lively and safe Zernikelaan as a result.
Upgrade Zernikelaan
The Zernike Campus is a dynamic place where knowledge institutions and business meet each other. The project Upgrade Zernikelaan is a collaboration of the municipality of Groningen, the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The construction work is done by constructor Koninklijke Oosterhof Holman.
