Medical students as buddy's for patients

Tue, 24 April 2018

From the middle of April 2018 onwards, residents of the province of Groningen are able to bring a medical student with them on their visit to a doctor. The new social company MedGezel has trained 50 doctors in training to make this new healthcare concept. The project starts in Groningen. Founder of the company is pediatrician Giliam Kuijpers. The mission is to help as many patients as possible in the stressful circumstances surrounding a hospital visit.

No valuable time lost

A visit to a doctor in a hospital often causes anxiety. A lot of people dread this, and more than half says afterwards that they haven't understood exaclty or remembered what the doctor has said. And a lot of patients are not in the position to bring a relative or friend for support to these appointments. Founder of MedGezel Giliam Kuijpers is certain: "MedGezel will bring a lot of relief on many fronts. The patient can be sure that he or she is prepared well for a visit to the doctor and will return home well informed. The doctors on the other hand will save valuable time because they don't have to explain things several times, or are approached afterwards with aditional questions. The students gain experience 'on the other side of the stothoscope' and have a good job on the side of their own field of study."
