Kick off 10 shared electric cars on Campus Groningen

Mon, 10 February 2020

From Monday, February 10th, the UMCG will start using ten electric cars for car sharing. These cars are intended for UMCG employees who travel many business kilometers. These electric cars are now available for their business trips. With this, the UMCG wants to offer a new, sustainable and future-proof form of mobility for employees who have to travel a lot for business and for whom public transport is not always an alternative. This initiative is part of CommShare: the community sharing service for smart sharing of facilities. Starting with a pilot of a shared car concept on Campus Groningen.

Henk Snapper, member of the Executive Board of the UMCG and also one of the users of the shared cars, is very enthusiastic about this possibility. “As UMCG we have an exemplary role for the city and region in terms of sustainability, reducing CO2 emissions and healthy aging. We are proud that we can be the first to participate in this pilot with shared electric cars, in order to make the business trips of our employees more sustainable. ”

The pilot

At first, CommShare will provide the ten electric cars for a one-year pilot. During the pilot year, the focus is on learning, improving and optimizing together. The shared cars are also made available for private use for a fee. The shared cars can be reserved and opened through an app. The pilot is made possible by CommShare; a collaboration of the Triade, Pouw Rent and Martinistad B.V. BMW & MINI.

The efficient use of spaces, facilities, equipment and energy is in line with the ambitions of Campus Groningen. CommShare is exploring the possibility to gradually allowing more organizations to join this sharing concept. This is to stimulate as much sustainable mobility as possible in and around Campus Groningen. Lisanne Brakenhoff, Manager Campus Groningen: “Campus Groningen is the ideal testing ground for new ideas and concepts. This is confirmed with this pilot of CommShare together with the UMCG. Together more is possible and we will move forward. You need that little bit of courage to change and share. We are therefore proud of this development and hope that in the short term we can also tempt other campus residents to join in! "
