The student accommodations are part of Proxima, the first residential complex on Zernike Campus, set to be completed in the summer of 2024. Proxima will feature 401 rooms that can be double-occupied during peak periods at the end of summer, accommodating a total of 802 students. The shortage of rooms among international students is a recurring issue each year. They arrive in the Netherlands during the summer period, but graduated students have not yet vacated their rooms.

In collaboration with the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, the municipality has signed an agreement with SSH to construct housing on Zernike Campus. This involves temporary accommodation for a period of 10 years. Proxima is being built by construction company Plegt-Vos Noord on behalf of SSH and in partnership with developer Jebber.
