By the end of 2023, the Clinical Research Unit on Campus Groningen achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification with a highly positive evaluation. A certified ISO 9001 quality management system ensures clear processes and communication structures, as well as defined tasks and responsibilities throughout the organization.
Diete de Boer, manager of the Clinical Research Unit Groningen (CRU Groningen), expressed great satisfaction with the obtained certificate: "This demonstrates that we have this relatively new facility well-organized and allows us to prove that the CRU provides an environment that meets the qualitative requirements for research involving patients and healthy volunteers."
Unique Collaboration
CRU Groningen is the outcome of a unique collaboration between ICON, a global commercial CRO, and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the renowned academic hospital on the Healthy Ageing Campus Groningen. UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands and the largest employer in the northern region. Over 13,000 employees provide patient care, engage in medical education, and conduct groundbreaking scientific research focused on 'healthy and active aging.'
Research
With 13 beds, CRU Groningen offers the opportunity to conduct clinical research in early and late phases involving healthy participants and patients with various medical conditions. The unit is situated on the UMCG campus, ensuring direct access to hospital care. This research facility is equipped for intensive monitoring and (outpatient) clinical treatments. CRU Groningen was ceremoniously opened in 2022, and the first studies commenced in May 2022.
Studies conducted at the Clinical Research Unit Groningen have contributed to new insights into medication for Alzheimer's disease, combating bacterial infections, aortic valve stenosis, and medication for heart failure.
Experiences with the CRU
"From the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology (UMCG), I've been in contact with the CRU for 2 clinical studies. For these studies, patients spend several half-days at the CRU, undergoing multiple assessments. Collaboration with the CRU is pleasant: communication is easy, and study visit scheduling is flexible. As a researcher, I have the space to conduct all procedures calmly, with expert support available if needed for tasks like nursing. For our patients, the CRU provides a comfortable environment, quieter than the hospital. Specifically for renal function studies, there's a comfortable chair available, along with facilities for breakfast and relaxation. I recommend the CRU for (academic) research because there's good communication regarding study requirements, and both researchers and patients are offered a pleasant and safe research environment."
David Smeijer: PhD Candidate, M.D. | Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology - UMCG
"In May 2022, the first study initiated by ICON commenced in the Clinical Research Unit. Back then, it was quite exciting. Currently, almost two years have passed, and much has changed and improved since. Communication with floor managers is easy, which is very comforting. Due to the relatively small-scale unit, interaction with colleagues and participants or patients is often easier, and the atmosphere is congenial. Many find this enjoyable."
