Frontrunners Klaas Holtman and Amber van der Schaaf
“The Campus Trail is about much more than just running,” says Amber van der Schaaf, communications & community manager at Campus Groningen. “It’s about movement, connection, encounters, and showcasing what’s happening on campus.” Since 2017, Campus Groningen and partners like the WEST Business Association, Hanze University, the University of Groningen, the sports center, Lode Holding, and the ACLO board have organized this fun run through the buildings of Zernike Campus.
Participants get a behind-the-scenes look at laboratories, companies, and surprising innovations. “Many people cycle past the buildings without knowing what goes on inside,” says Klaas Holtman from WEST. “The Trail opens doors, literally and figuratively.”
The Trail is no longer just for students and staff. “It’s becoming more of a city-wide and Northern Netherlands event,” says Amber. “The energy is electric at the starting line.” Klaas, on the other hand, loves the finish line: “That’s where people share their stories.”
Both Amber and Klaas care about their physical and mental wellbeing. Amber takes a walk every day, while Klaas recharges with the occasional power nap. Amber laughs: “You might bump into me this year, if Klaas decides to join in.” Klaas smiles: “Moving together and celebrating together, that’s what makes the Trail special.”
