Frontrunner Maarten Eisema

Maarten Eisema, Head of Strategic Relationships at the UMCG Innovation Center, understands the importance of connection like no other, both in his work and daily routine. "I sometimes refer to myself as a connector. I make sure ideas, people, and organisations find each other, inside and outside the UMCG.

Movement plays a crucial role in this. Maarten cycles daily from Haren to his workplace at the Healthy Ageing Campus. "That half-hour bike ride energizes me. It helps me clear my mind." He also consciously uses walking: "Whenever possible, I conduct introductory meetings outdoors, walking around the campus. Fresh air often brings fresh ideas."

Although Maarten now spends most of his time on a racing bike, he previously participated in the Campus Trail. "During that event, I met the university's rector. We struck up a conversation, both of us in sportswear instead of suits and ties. It immediately makes connecting easier. Sport brings people together."

What does he appreciate about running and the Campus Trail? "It's accessible. Running is relatively inexpensive; you just need a good pair of shoes. That accessibility allows everyone to participate. And the Trail is a wonderful way to meet new people and discover new places."
