UMCG Lectures at Noorderzon
This year, UMCG is again participating in Noorderzon, offering lectures on music as medicine, emotions through art, and the wondrous workings of our brain. The three lectures will be held on Saturday, August 24, and a ticket costs 7 euros. UMCG is organizing the lectures in collaboration with the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. There are 60 seats available in the Nova tent, so act quickly: once they’re gone, they’re gone!
Music as Medicine, Saturday, August 24, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Live music contributes to the well-being and recovery of patients after surgery and fosters better communication between patients and nurses. This is evident from joint research by UMCG and Hanze. Krista de Wit, a researcher at Hanze, will share the findings of this joint research. A healthcare professional from UMCG will share their experiences. Musicians from the MiMiC Foundation (Meaningful Music in Healthcare) will provide the musical accompaniment.

Emotions Through Art, Saturday, August 24, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
What do ancient frescoes, paintings, and drawings tell us about the emotions of children and their parents in early modern Europe? Jeroen Dekker, emeritus professor of Foundations of Pedagogy at the University of Groningen, will take you back to times when much attention was given to children, such as the Renaissance, Humanism, and the Reformation. Along the way, you will encounter artists like Rembrandt, Matthias Grünewald, and Giuseppe Cesari.

The Wondrous Workings of Our Brain, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
That lobe in your head determines your entire life, yet as ordinary citizens, we know very little about it. This is about to change! UMCG researchers Marie Jose van Tol, Magdalini Ioannou, and Silvia Ciampelli will tell you more about the relationships between the brain and our mental health (especially depression), between the brain and the gut, and between language and speech.
