Retiring early or stopping work at the age of thirty? To achieve that, investing in stocks, bonds, or cryptocurrencies is becoming increasingly popular. Some people do it very methodically: hence, the growing interest in the FIRE movement (Financial Independence Retire Early). The goal of FIRE is to live as frugally as possible, saving and investing your money to accumulate 25 times your annual salary. After that, you can stop working and live off your savings. Research by Nibud and Rabobank shows that about 40 percent of young adults between 18 and 30 invest. But how does investing work exactly? Why is there such a strong desire to earn money differently? What are the risks? And is achieving as much return as possible selfish, or can smart and sustainable investing not only benefit yourself but even move the world forward?
