It's finally here: the first real Climate Tree is a reality! On Tuesday, October 10th, on Sustainability Day, Hanzehogeschool Groningen proudly unveils one of the first two specimens at the Zernike Campus in Groningen, and they'd like to do it with you!
It all started with an idea from their former student of Industrial Product Design, Niels Kuijpens. During his internship at the NoorderRuimte Knowledge Center and House of Design, he created the Climate Tree: a frame made of recycled plastic in which living plants can grow in and above the frame. This circular solution allows cities to green and cool areas without disturbing the underground infrastructure. It's a fantastic idea because the tree is not rooted in the ground; the roots and a self-regulating water system are located within the frame. After multiple prototypes and further research from NoorderRuimte, the first fully grown Climate Tree is now being placed at Zernikeplein 7, and Hanzehogeschool Groningen wants to celebrate this achievement.
