On Saturday 20 September, the national Open Energy Day will take place for the fifth time. Across the Netherlands, sustainable energy projects will open their doors to the public. In Groningen, WarmteStad’s Heating Plant will be participating in the event. Visitors can join guided tours of the Heating Plant building on the Zernike Campus between 11:00 and 15:00. WarmteStad’s district heating network supplies sustainable heat to businesses, institutions, and homes in the northwest of the city.
Local sources
WarmteStad is owned by the Municipality of Groningen and Waterbedrijf Groningen. The company aims to provide the city step by step with locally generated, sustainable energy. Around 8,000 homes, schools, and other buildings are already connected. The heat is sourced from various local resources, including residual heat from data centres, the largest solar thermal park in Northwest Europe, and the Zernike Heating Plant. During Open Energy Day, visitors can see firsthand how the company operates at this location.
More information about Open Energy Day can be found on the organisation’s website.
