Junior Track TT-circuit in Assen

The Self Driving Challenge offers young talent the opportunity to develop their skills in smart mobility over a period of six months. A unique project, where student teams compete with each other by letting their self-driving vehicle race on the circuit.

FINAL RACE: 8 JUNE

No less than six motivated student teams are set to develop the software for their autonomous racing kart. They will compete with each other by racing a self-driving kart on a circuit on Thursday, 8 June. This is the fifth time the RDW has organised the competition for autonomous driving vehicles. The final of the Self Driving Challenge will be hosted by presenter and automotive journalist Roland Tameling, known as the Huge Car Guy. The highlights of the competition can be followed live via the Self Driving Challenge website.

Study programme

The student teams are challenged to have an autonomous vehicle race the fastest possible lap on the circuit. To achieve this goal, RDW is organising test days in the run-up to the final, to test the developed software. The test days take place on the junior TT track in Assen or on the RDW proving ground in Lelystad. The study programme starts every year in February and ends in June with a grand finale on the circuit. The aim of the challenge is to gain knowledge about the complexity of autonomous vehicles and how these vehicles make choices. This helps RDW to prepare for a future in which self-driving technology will be playing an increasingly important role. Knowledge on the use and possibly the type-approval process.
