A world without engineers is unthinkable. Since ancient times, engineers have contributed to progress through inventions and innovations. They combine scientific knowledge with practical solutions to societal challenges. In a rapidly changing world, they remain essential, for example in healthcare with technologies like scanners, prostheses, and 3D printing. Engineers also have a significant impact on space exploration, aviation, climate research, as well as the development of satellite technology and water safety. On Engineer's Day, March 12th, special attention is given to the important role engineers play in our society.
Additionally, engineers play a crucial role in AI innovations such as autonomous vehicles and advanced diagnostic systems. Although the engineering profession is often not fully appreciated in the Netherlands, KIVI works to preserve the title of Engineer. Each year, the 'Engineer of the Year' award is presented to professionals who contribute to solving societal issues.
In 2022, the KIVI Engineering Student Team Award was launched to encourage student teams to showcase their innovative projects. Starting in 2024, the KIVI annual conference will be part of Engineer's Day, with an annual focus on current topics such as the energy transition, digitalization, and sustainability.
Program
Engineer's Day consists of three parts:
- The KIVI annual conference, held in the morning and afternoon, covering current topics.
- The presentation of the Prins Friso Engineering Award, honoring the engineer who has made an exceptional contribution to society.
- The KIVI Engineering Student Team Award, recognizing young engineers in training.
Though these events stand alone, together they form a day of inspiration and appreciation for the engineering profession—a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and societal impact, highlighting the power of engineers.
