Did you already hear about Blue Energy, also named Salinity Gradient Energy? More and more people are becoming aware of this technology and the possibilities that come with it.
Generating electricity based on the mixing of two streams with different salt concentrations (e.g. sea water and river water), could have an enormous energy potential. In the Netherlands we already have two pilot projects of Blue Energy power plants. The security of supply is high, because water will always flow: also when there is no wind or sunshine.
Wetsus, the European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology is coordinating several research projects regarding the Blue Energy theme. They also focus on the development of the Blue Battery. A product that stores renewable electricity solely using water and table salt. Michel Saakes is the scientific project leader of the Blue Energy theme at Wetsus. He will visit Groningen to tell us more about the power of water in the energy transition.

About Dr. Michel Saakes
Dr. Michel Saakes obtained his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Utrecht. He previously worked at TNO, where he focused his research on electrochemistry, energy research and process innovation. He is currently Scientific project leader for the Blue Energy – and Resource Recovery themes at Wetsus and Scientific Research Manager at Magneto Special Anodes BV. He was the winner of the Innovation prize 2001 TNO “Environment, Energy and Process Technology (TNO-MEP)” and the Award “Sustainable Innovator TNO-MEP 2002”. In 2014 he won a special prize during the annual Wetsus congress, for being a changemaker as a scientist and innovator.
