With the arrival of wind farms in the North Sea, there is an enormous opportunity for nature enhancement. The project: The Rich North Sea, encourages the construction of wind farms to go hand in hand with nature conservation. And tries to develop a scientific blueprint for nature enhancement within wind farms worldwide.

Renewable energy technologies are the solution for the reduction of greenhouse gases generated by the power sector. However, development of renewable-energy projects should always take into account the long-term effects on the local natural environment. By understanding the current and potential environmental issues associated with renewables, we can take steps to avoid or minimize these impacts, or even use renewables to harness natural processes. The opportunities are mainly under water. As it is not allowed to fish over the bottom in wind farms, the underwater nature has the opportunity to develop undisturbed.

Speaker: Erwin Coolen
Coolen has work-ed for various organizations within the wind sector. Coolen was vice presi-dent at Vestas, where he was responsible for offshore wind in Central Europe until 2005. He then became active on the Dutch wind market. Coolen is the founder of OutSmart, independent manager of offshore wind farms. He recently founded the ECHT innovation agency. He is also involved in education and research into wind energy, including for the Arnhem and Nijmegen High School.

This event is a public event organized by Energy Academy and is defined as an Energy Energy Learning Activity for students of the Hanze University of Applied Sience and the University of Groningen. The Energy Learning Activities are part of the Energy Academy Programme.
