Approach to ice control on Zernike Campus and UG-owned premises

As the winter season is just around the corner, the University of Groningen (UG) would like to inform you about ice control on Zernike Campus. This year, they will adopt a new approach: preventive ice control.

What does preventive ice control entail?

Preventive ice control involves taking anti-icing measures before it gets slippery. This is based on ongoing monitoring of weather forecasts and road conditions. If frost, wet snow, or freezing rain is expected, roads, bike paths, and pavements will be preventively salted to prevent ice from forming.

Where will salting take place?

  • Roads and bike paths: All public roads and bike paths on Zernike Campus

  • Pavements: The public walking routes on the Zernike campus and the UG-owned pavements (Please note: this only concerns walking routes, not large squares or entire surfaces)

  • Pavements in front of buildings: These will be taken care of by the building manager.

Attached you will find the ice prevention map for the Zernike campus. This map clearly shows the routes which will be preventively salted. For other locations in the city centre, this applies to the footpaths surrounding UG-owned buildings.

Ice control measures will be carried out by Krinkels company and the Municipality of Groningen.

This approach will enable us to keep the campus locations as safe as possible during the winter months. Let’s make sure together that everyone can travel comfortably and without slipping from one place to another.
