More bicycle parking facilities at Park and Ride (P+R) sites and bus stops

As more people choose to cycle from P+R locations, bicycle parking facilities are becoming increasingly crowded. Therefore, the Municipality of Groningen aims to expand the existing bicycle parking facilities and bicycle lockers at the P+R sites in Haren, Meerstad, and Reitdiep. Additionally, the city council plans to install extra bicycle parking facilities at five major bus stops. This investment totals €937,000.

In recent years, the municipality has encouraged Park-and-Bike schemes at P+R sites as an alternative to car travel. Philip Broeksma, Alderman for Traffic and Transport, stated, "This has had an effect; we see more and more people using bicycles from P+R sites, for example, towards the city center. Consequently, we also see that the current bicycle parking capacity is insufficient, which is why additional bicycle racks and lockers are being installed." The expansion of the facilities, including around 250 covered bicycle racks and 20 bicycle lockers, will ensure sufficient space for P+R users to park their bicycles in the future.

More bicycle parking facilities at bus stops

There is also a need for (additional) bicycle parking spaces at five bus stops, particularly along busy High-Quality Public Transport routes. These bus stops include Verzetsstrijderslaan and Paterswoldseweg along the Peizerbaan, Van Ketwich Verschuurlaan, Zaagmuldersweg, and Sontplein. In total, around 180 extra parking spaces are planned. The main expansion will be at the busy Verzetsstrijderslaan stop, where a covered bicycle parking facility with approximately 150 spaces is planned.

Social consensus
Although the number of direct residents near the P+R sites in Haren, Meerstad, and Reitdiep, as well as the five bus stops, is small, the placement of new facilities or the expansion of existing ones will be done in consultation with local residents. Implementation of the expansion is scheduled for 2025.
