Heat plant WarmteStad
WarmteStad builds a new, final heat plant at the corner Zernikelaan / Pondematen on Zernike Campus. This will replace the building that currently functions as a temporary heat plant, recognisable by the text ‘Wij houden je Warm’ (We keep you Warm).
Restwarmte
The plant will primarily be fed by residual heat. This residual heat will come from the adjacent data centers QTS and Bytesnet. To increase the temperature of this residual heat, WarmteStad wil be using heat pumps and cogeneration. Until this new source is ready, companies and houses on Zernike Campus, Paddepoel and Selwerd will be heated by the temporary heat plant, that was taken into use in December 2018 on Zernike Campus.
Planning
The construction planning of the new heat plant is as follows:
- End 2020: Clearing and preparing the building site
- First quarter of 2021: Start foundation and building
- First quarter of 2021: Placing heat buffers
- Second half of 2021: Installation of technical installations
- Second half of 2021: Commissioning of the heat plant
About WarmteStad
WarmteStad – a collaboration between the municipality of Groningen and Waterbedrijf Groningen – has been founded in 2014 and installs a heating grid in the northern districts of Groningen. This pipeline network with warm water starts at Zernike Campus and spans 4 kilometers by now. The heating grid will be heated by residual heat from data centers Bytesnet and QTS in the future, both located on Zernike Campus. Solar energy is an intended additional heat source. Over 10.000 households, organisations and buildings will make use of sustainable heat in the future.
CampusTV on site
In November 2021, CampusTV visited the building site of the new heat plant of WarmteStad on Zernike Campus. We spoke wit project manager Bert Koelman of WarmteStad on the new heat plant. Video in Dutch.
